My damage disk was sent to SECURE DATA RECOVERY from a local store. It was acknowledged by email as soon as it was received and the recovery process was described to me by William and Jake. It took two months and I called frequently. Both gentleman answered my questions and finally I received the recovered data. Most of my documents and photos were recovered and rendered in a form that I could decipher after a bit of a learning curve to find everything.Yes, it is an expensive venture, explained to me this way: "The first thing, we replaced those damaged heads with functioning ones. It sort of functions like organ donation, we need an exact match from a very similar drive. We then need to trick the drive into accepting the new heads, and the first replacement isn''t always a success. That does require special equipment and needs to be done in a certified, audited, clean room lab in order to avoid any further damage to the drive. My engineers wear hazmat suits and nitrile gloves as well. Once that is done, we can start imaging the drive with some custom software and begin to clear up some of the other errors the drive had. The hard part is over, we just have to essentially scan the drive, sector by sector to ensure we get all of the data on the drive, error free. That does take some time, most hard drives have billions of sectors and we scan several times to avoid any missed areas. We use custom built PCs and software to do so efficiently. Followed the process on the website and got great, fast customer service from Eric Fisher. The reader sensors on my Western Digital hard drive had failed, and so I had a 2TB backup drive that was useless. I had tried various software solutions to try and read the drive, but to no avail. Secure Data Recovery was able to get almost everything, minus a couple corrupted files. But be prepared for the sticker shock. 5 stars on the service. 2 stars on the cost.
